This will also help them navigate safely to the toilet in the dark.\u003cbr\u003e\n• Make sure you are close enough to the child’s room to be able to hear the\u003cbr\u003e\nalarm and help them as needed.\u003cbr\u003e\n• Keep a spare set of sheets, underwear and pyjamas close by.\u003cbr\u003e\n• The program may be slow and frustrating, but always remember to offer\u003cbr\u003e\nencouragement and give praise when the child has a dry night. Do not scold\u003cbr\u003e\nthe child if they wet the bed.\u003cbr\u003e\n• Restricting intake of liquids before bedtime does not help treat bedwetting.\u003cbr\u003e\nIt is important the child has enough to drink during the day.\u003cbr\u003e\n• Drinks containing caffeine should be avoided.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nProgress Chart\u003cbr\u003e\n• A progress chart and stickers have been included to help keep track of the\u003cbr\u003e\nchild’s progress. Ask the child if they remember the alarm going off and\u003cbr\u003e\nwhat they did.\u003cbr\u003e\n• You can also introduce a reward scheme for positive behaviour to encourage\u003cbr\u003e\nthe child to want to succeed.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nCompletion of Training\u003cbr\u003e\n• The child should continue to use the alarm until they have had 14\u003cbr\u003e\nconsecutive dry nights.\u003cbr\u003e\n• It can take up to 12 weeks for a child to be fully dry at night without needing\u003cbr\u003e\nthe bedwetting alarm.\u003cbr\u003e\nTo reduce the chance of relapse, the process of “overlearning” can be\u003cbr\u003e\nimplemented. Ask your healthcare professional if the child should trial this\u003cbr\u003e\nprocess before discontinuing the alarm. This process should not be used if\u003cbr\u003e\nthe child is on Desmopressin medication.\u003cbr\u003e\n• The child should have a large drink each night in the hour before bed and\u003cbr\u003e\ncontinue with alarm training, until a further 14 consecutive dry nights have\u003cbr\u003e\nbeen achieved.\u003cbr\u003e\n• When the child has reached 14 dry nights in a row using the over-learning\u003cbr\u003e\nmethod, the alarm is no longer required, and the pre-bedtime drink can be\u003cbr\u003e\nstopped.\u003cbr\u003e\n• A relapse is when the child wets the bed two or more nights consecutively. If\u003cbr\u003e\nrelapse occurs, repeating alarm training will often produce a good response.\u003cbr\u003e\n• If bedwetting persists after 3 to 6 months of alarm training, alternative\u003cbr\u003e\ntreatment options should be considered\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1.
